St.Joseph’s high school, Gujranwala was founded on the 1st of April 1954, by Rev. Fr. Bene OFM (Cap) then parish priest of Gujranwala.
Originally named as St. Mary’s School, it was started especially for Christian Students at Khokharki.Firstly the school begun with fifteen Students. In 1958 this school was shifted to another place close to Khokharki and the Name was changed from St. Mary’s to St. Joseph’s School by Rev.Fr. Clarence OFM (Cap). NowFr.Clarencenot only changed the site and baptized it with a new Name St. Joseph’s, but also introduced the English Medium of Education.Mr. And Mrs.Fanthams, an Angelo-Indian Couple was the first to teach in the English Medium School. Day after day and Month there was a growth and progress. The School was growing steadily and built up gradually into two high schools up to Matriculation. It also had changes in the field of Administration. In 1964 the management of the school was handed over to the FIC brothers. Rev. Bro. John. He was the first principal for the FICs. In his Leadership the school grew well and made a lot of improvements. Bros. Robert and David were the successive principals of the school.
They brought a complete change in the structure form of the school.
The year 1972, came as a year of surprise for all the schools under the Christian Administration all over Pakistan. The government tried to nationalize all the privately managed schools. Many Christian schools became a prey to this order. And evidently St.Joseph’s Urdu High School, was also aimed at under this regulation and was nationalized over night. With a long term of discussion bargain and protest by the Christian Community, finally only a portion of the building up to the middle section of the school was nationalized. Providently the entire property and the higher section of the school were not nationalized over night. Having gone through this tyranny, then principal Rev. Brother David tried his best and again built few more class-rooms and made the private section once more from class six to matriculation. Thus having handed over a section of the school to the government and rebuilt few more classrooms, Joseph’s Urdu High School regained strength in the middle and high Classes.
In 1985, there was another change in the entire structure of Administration. The management of the schools was once again handed over to the care of the parish priest Rt. Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Yousaf, the vicar general of the Lahore Diocese. Thus the FIC Brothers having done a very commendable and wonderful job of education, construction of schools and hostel for boys, were Bid farewell by the new Administration in June 1986. Rev. Bro. David FIC was the last of the FICs in the order of principal, who did a great deal for St. Joseph’s until their departure.
Having bid farewell to the previous administration, Rt. Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Yousaf, took over as the principal of both St. Joseph’s English and Urdu Medium schools. The lack of a primary section in the Urdu Medium was started by Rt. Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Yousaf in March1988. Certainly, he worked on the possibility of a new building for the primary section and successfully completed the new block for the primary section in March 1991.
He also obtained the services of the Administration of school to effectively enable his duties. Thus, Major (Rtd). Joseph Sharaf functioned as the Administrator from 1986 to March 1989. And later in April1989 Mr. Percy Mariathas Anthony was appointed as the Administrator of the school. The Principal and the Administrator worked hard for the betterment of the school during these years from 1989 to 2008. The school progressed in many ways. In June 2007, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Yousaf left for Lahore as a pastor and Mr. Percy as Administrator continued for the development and betterment of the schools. In May 2008, Mr. Percy M. Anthony was appointed as Principal of St. Joseph’s English Medium High School, Satellite Town, Gujranwala by Archbishop Lawrence J. Saldanah, Archbishop of Lahore. The Urdu Medium was handed over to Rev. Sr. Merceline as principal of this section.
Both Mr. Anthony and Sr. Merceline, as Principals of these institutions are working hard for the further development of these schools in a more Realistic and tangible way to bring up these schools according to the present and future requirements of Education.
